PREFACE by Dave Stemple
The purpose of these pages is to present information about Jane Yolen. The style itself is part of the information about her. The style I chose emphasizes two facets: she is about books, and she is grounded in the rich tradition of children's literature, including fairy and folk tales. I have tried to credit accurately the source of all the graphics, nearly all of which are from 19th century children's book illustrations and end papers. I believe them all to be in the public domain and we want to be told if that is not so. We will remove any graphic that is not in the public domain if we cannot get permission to have it on this site.
There are a lot of graphics in these pages, but I have made all information available in text-only pages accessible via the links at the bottom of the home page. The alternative text for the large book image on the home page directs the reader to the text-only links at the bottom of the page and describes the only image found in a text-only browsing of these pages. Tables are used in the text-only pages to present the information felicitously to a sighted text reader, but should not interfere with a smooth audial rendering of the text. (See site for the Center for Applied Special Technology.)
Clearly, images tell a part of the story more succinctly and, well, more graphically than words alone. I have tried to balance the desire for graphic quality and speed of downloading in the choice of size and quality of images. Frames are used in index pages about books. Frames can be problematic for some browsers, which is another reason, beyond accessibilty, for supplying the text-only pages. The major searching feature in each index page is a scrollable list of cover images in its own frame. We believe that this is an effective way to search, especially for children's books, even if there is a wait for the covers to be displayed.
Enjoy the site. Comments and suggestions about style, features, function or form can be sent to me at janeyolen@aol.com.

NOTE FOR STORYTELLERS:
I am always delighted and honored when someone wants to tell my stories. I have four rules:
1. Always identify the author.
2. If it is appropriate, show/display the book from which the story has been taken.
3. Do not change my endings.
4. If you wish to set down the story in a transmittable form--in a tape (audio or video) or in a book/brochure/pamphlet/article or other medium, then you will have to contact my agent and pay a fee:

ADVICE
Images: If expanding images is too slow for you, you can use the text-only pages via the links at the bottom of the home page.
Fonts: It is best to use fonts of no more than 12 pts for variable width and 10 for fixed width (Netscape) or Medium on Explorer.
Frames: The book details pages use frames to allow scanning book covers and getting a book's details by clicking in the covers frame. If your browser does not have frames, you should see a message in these pages to that effect. Use the text-only pages via the links at the bottom of the home page, or use the Full List of Books in the Works page.

For Writers Page
Graphic header is by Howard Pyle from Pepper & Salt or Seasoning for Young Folk, Harper and brothers, New York, 1913. The background is, we believe, from an illustration in the German edition of the 18th century Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux by M. Le Comte de Buffon. It is scanned from a print we acquired in Germany. The owl is an Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) or Uhu as they say in German. It is a close relative to the Great Horned Owl, featured in Owl Moon. In the French edition of Owl Moon, the owl is identified as un grand duc, the French name of the Eagle Owl. The owl in the header is probably a Barn Owl (Tyto alba), but could be a Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus).
