Cover of The Sea King by Jane Yolen and Shulamith Oppenheim

Sea King, The

After Shulamith Oppenheim and I handed in the manuscript for the adult folklore collection, THE FISH PRINCE & OTHER MERMEN STORIES, the editor called us up. He thought that there was actually a wonderful picture book that could come out of the collection, and he had the perfect artist. He showed us the man’s work and we were both suitably impressed. The story we agreed upon was a Russian tale. I did a bit of tidying and fixing it up–because a story in a collection reads differently from a story in a child’s picture book–and that is how the book came to be.

What reviewers have said:

  • “The authors have woven many elements of folklore into this compelling Russian tale. These universal patterns of tasks and trials, tricks and transformations create interest and suspense… Similarly the richly painted illustrations … are intense, bold and vibrant.” –The Bookmark Journal for BC Teacher-librarians
