Adam was fifteen, already a fine musician, when we sold this book. These were mostly old lullabies I had sung to the children (including one I composed) so it was a gift to be sending them on in such a lovely package. The pictures by Mikolaycak are gorgeous–warm, loving, beautifully composed. (Aha–a musical pun!)
This four-part fantasy novel reads like an expanded folk tale. There is a sea witch, a hero, a heroine, and a lot of magic. Patricia MacLachlan’s husband Bob claims that this is his favorite of my books. A Japanese edition came out in 1985, a Spanish edition in 1997.
This book began as a shorter poem, “Mama’s Kisses,” published in Nick Jr. Magazine in 2002. And then I expanded it into a picture book, rewrote it a dozen or more times for myself and then the editor. That’s how it goes!
My third and last (I swear) Holocaust novel, hung on the armature of Hansel and Gretel, about twins Chaim & Gittel who are 14 when the Holocaust begins and they and their parents are moved from a lovely cozy house with a front and back yard

I was called by the editor at Walker who wanted a picture book on monsters. “Only if I can write it with my daughter,” I said. She was delighted and so Heidi got to work on her first book. We divided up the monsters (I got Nessie and the golem as I recall)
